How to Cook Steel Cut Oats

Steel cut oats is a whole grain cereal with an appearance of brown rice. This cereal in its natural form has beneficial endosperm and germ which the instant oatmeal version doesn’t possess as these properties were removed. Steel oats can be found in health and whole food stores across America. Because of its natural nutritional content, one is able to benefit from a great amount of fibers, protein, magnesium and other nutrients.

No doubt, a healthy diet that includes oatmeal will aid in lowering LDL cholesterol which in the long run will prevent heart disease, clogged arteries and strokes. One way to prepare and cook this delightful cereal is to soak it from the previous night. This is done by pouring boiling water over the steel cut oats. Next morning, cook same in a sturdy pot over low to medium heat. Cook until it’s tender; then, add cream, desired spices, and sweeten with brown sugar or honey. If preferred; toss in a few raisins for added fiber and sweetness. Also, to gain a little crunch, add toasted slivered almonds or walnuts. 

Another way to cook steel cut oats is to toast same. In a firm bottom sauce pan, melt a few pats of unsalted butter; then add oats and toast for approximately two minutes. Proceed to carefully add required boiling water and stir. Simmer mixture on low heat for another 25 minutes. Then add and stir in milk and allow it to continue cooking for another ten minutes. Do ensure that oatmeal  does not stick or burn. Remove from burner and sweeten to taste. Brown sugar or honey are excellent ways to sweeten your oatmeal. You can gain added flavor and taste by topping with your favorite berries.

When the temperatures dip on the outskirts, a bowl of steel cut oats is the ideal choice to warm the palate. It will keep you satiated for hours. Moreover, you will enjoy the nutty, mouthwatering goodness that will comfort your soul.
